LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 28-JULY 4

REMINDER: The Library will be closed on Sunday, July 4, as well as Monday, July 5.

ADULT SERVICES:
At 7 p.m. on Monday, June 28, the film Alice in Wonderland starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter will be shown in the Large Meeting Room. No tickets are needed. Rated PG.

YOUTH SERVICES:
On Monday, June 28, at 2 p.m., in the Large Meeting room, representatives from the Shedd Aquarium will present a program on the Pacific Northwest: Mapping out Mammals. No registration is needed.

There are still a few openings for the Thursday, July 1, afternoon sessions of Slime. Register online.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 21-27

ADULT SERVICES:
Ever heard of "Quinoa"? Learn about this complete-protein grain and how to use it in healthy recipes at the program Whole Foods "Health Starts Here" Cooking Demo on Monday, June 21, at 7 p.m. Register online; there is currently a Waiting List for this class.

On Tuesday, June 22, Bill Haase will present a program on several Founding Fathers he calls The Magnificent Seven--Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Hamilton, Franklin, and Jay. Learn how their individual strengths combined to create a new government in a new country. Register online.

Love gardens? Then join the bus trip on Wednesday, June 23, to visit the 18 themed gardens at the Rotary Gardens in Janesville and the Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford. Lunch will be at the noted Cliffbreakers Restaurant in Rockford. The cost is $73 and registration is open until June 22. Tickets are available at the Circulation Desk.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Summer Storytimes and programs begin this week. Children aged 6 months to 2 1/2 years can drop in with an adult at Babytales on Mondays at 10 a.m. or at Twilight Tales on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Toddlers aged 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 can come with an adult to Toddler Tales on Mondays at 11 a.m. Family Storytimes on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. are for children of preschool age and up. On Wednesdays at 7 p.m. all ages are welcome to the Evening Storytime and Activity. No registration is needed for any of these programs.

At 2 p.m. on Monday, June 21, Shedd Aquarium Outreach will present the program Amazon: Raised on the River in the large Meeting Room. Although geared to children ages 5 to 11, all ages are welcome. No registration is required, but space is limited.

On Tuesday, June 22, at 3 p.m., Young Adults in grades 6-12 can decorate a t-shirt or tank top (for a beach bag) using markers in a special "tie-dye effect". Register online; there is currently a Waiting List for this class.

Tie-Dye T-Shirts will be on Thursday, June 24. All classes are full with Waiting Lists at this time. If it rains, the program will be "Slime".

On Friday, June 25, the Barefoot Hawaiians will perform at 11 a.m. All ages are welcome. No Registration needed.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 14-20

In Youth Services, children from newborn through grade 12 can sign up for Make a Splash and earn prizes for reading minutes. Opening day registrants will receive a yummy treat. Sign-ups will run from 9:30 a.m. until 9 p.m.

The YS program will run through the end of July. The AS program will run through the end of August.


ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, June 14, the monthly Job Search Workshop held by the Illinois IDES will take place from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Besides help in constructing an effective resume and suggestions on job searching techniques, the workshop will also cover interviewing and will provide opportunities for mock interviews. Register online.

AARP Driver Training will be conducted on two successive Friday's: June 18 and June 25. Both sessions must be attended. This workshop is open to drivers aged 50 and above. It will cover the Rules of the Road and driving skills and techniques. There is a fee of $14--$12 for AARP members. Check with your insurance company for possible rate adjustments for taking this class. Register online.

YOUTH SERVICES:
On Wednesday, June 16, The Spoon Man will perform in Kids Korner at 11 a.m. Ordinary spoons will become musical instruments as demonstrated by Jim Cruise. All ages are welcome, but children under kindergarten age must have an adult with them. No registration is needed, but space is limited. No strollers will be allowed.

What is an Avatar and how can I get one? Find out on Thursday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at the Create Your Own Avatar: Self Portrait Workshop taught by artist Christine Thornton for children in grades 4 and up. Register online.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 7-13

The Friends will be having a Mini Book/Media Sale on Friday, June 11, from 3-7 p.m., and on Saturday, June 12, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Audio tapes on cassette and CD, VHS tapes, and paperbacks will be highlighted.

On Friday, June 11, the next Got Game! Night will start after-hours at 7 p.m. Ages 12 and up are welcome to play Wii, Playstation, and PC games in groups or solo until 10 p.m. Pizza and pop will be provided. Children under 17 must have written parental permission. Register online.
