LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 25-31

ADULT SERVICES:
How does a computer actually work? What does "crash" mean? What is a KB? These and other questions will be answered by Scott Sanders on Monday, October 25, at 7 p.m., in the class Introduction to Computers. This class will not cover the Internet. One space is still available as of Sunday morning. Register online.

Richie Sandberg will demonstrate the use of free sites for Online Photo Editing on Thursday, October 28, at 7 p.m. Learn how to use them to crop, resize, rotate, and otherwise modify your photos. Register online.

YOUTH SERVICES:
This week the regular Ready-to-Read, Alphabet Soup, and Evening Storytime will be replaced by the annual Preschool/Kindergarten Halloween Party and Parade. There will be skits, puppet shows, songs, and stories, as well as a special treat for each child. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes for the parade around the Library. No registration is necessary. Come on Tuesday, October 26, at 10 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 27, at 10 a.m. or 7 p.m., or Thursday, October 28, at 10 a.m.

On Sunday, October 31, stop in before Trick-or-Treating for free Face Painting by Julie Adriani. No registration is needed. Then Trick-or-Treat inside the Library.

Reminder for Chess Class students: There are no classes on Saturday, October 30.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 18-24

ADULT SERVICES:
At 7 p.m. on Monday, October 18, Saverio Martiradonna, of Eagle Ridge Financial Services in Glen Ellyn, will present the program The Savvy Social Security Planner. Learn methods of maximizing Social Security and MediGap Insurance without potentially seeing it all eventually go to a nursing home after retirement. Register online.

There are still a few openings for the Computer Class Microsoft Word 2010 to be held on Tuesday, October 19, at 3:30 p.m. Learn to create documents, edit them, save them, and more. Register online.

There will be a Flu Clinic on Wednesday, October 20, at 5 p.m., for adult residents of Elk Grove Village only, ages 19 and up. The cost will be $20--Medicare will be billed for eligible participants. The Hotline Number is 847-357-4057. For additional information, call Jill Derkits at the Library.

Vampires: Creatures of the Night, their legends and folklore in films, fantasy, and "fact", will be discussed by author Martin Riccardo, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 21. Register online.

YOUTH SERVICES:
It's Teen Read Week: Books with Beat at Your Library. From now through Saturday, students in grades 6-12 can earn tickets to be entered in a drawing for movie tickets and an IPod: play a special computer game in Youth Services and/or attend one (or both) of the special programs:

Ever wanted to try your hand at a CSI-type investigation of a crime? Then you might enjoy working with Officer Thomas from the Elk Grove Police Department as he presents a "hands-on" approach to gathering evidence on Monday, October 18, at 7 p.m. in Kids Korner at Cops on the Beat. Register online.

Are you more musically inclined? Then join our own Richie Sandberg as he demonstrates some techniques of using a drum set in a band on Thursday, October 21, at 7 p.m., at Beat It! There will even be opportunities to try some hands-on drumming. Register online.

Registration begins on Monday, October 18, for the 4th-5th Grade Battle of the Books. Each child must have written parent permission to participate, so a parent must come in person to fill out the form. For more information, call extension 268.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER11-17

ADULT SERVICES:
The monthly workshop for anyone unemployed who needs help in job searching, IDES's Effective Resumes, Interviewing & Job Search Techniques, is this Monday, October 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A chance to do a mock interview with a critique is part of the class. Register online.

Watch Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlet Johansson, on the "Big Screen" in the Large Meeting Room on Monday, October 11, at 7 p.m. No tickets are needed. Rated PG-13.

Join a bus trip, Autumn at Royal Oak, on Thursday, October 14. At Royal Oak Farm Orchard (near Harvard), ride in a tractor-pulled wagon through the apple orchards, shop at the Country Market, Apple Barn and Bakery (donuts, cider), and enjoy lunch at the Country Kitchen Restaurant. Tickets--$57--can be purchased at the Circulation Desk.

YOUTH SERVICES:
On Columbus Day, October 11, there will be two performances of Dave DiNaso's Traveling World of Reptiles--11 a.m. and 1 p.m.--in Kids Korner. No tickets are needed, though Elk Grove residents will have preference as seating is limited. Preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult.

On Friday, October 15, the animated film How to Train Your Dragon will be shown in Kids Korner at 4 p.m. Rated PG. Attendees may bring a snack to enjoy during the movie.

The first of three Saturday classes of Chess Instruction for children in grades 5-8 begins on October 16. Beginners will meet at 1 p.m.--register online. More experienced players can attend Strategies and Beyond at 2:15 p.m. Register online. There will also be a Tournament on November 13 at 1:30 p.m. open to anyone in grades k-8, not just those who take the classes. Register online.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 4-10

ADULT SERVICES:
Chili weather is here at last! Join Tatiyana Piper from Whole Foods Market on Monday, October 4, at 7 p.m., as she demonstrates some fast, easy, and delicious Chili Recipes. Register online.

The monthly Got Game! night returns on Friday, October 8, at 7 p.m. Playstation, Wii, and PC games will be available for solo or group (up to 4) playing. Pizza and soft drinks will also be available. Patrons aged 12 and up are welcome, but those under 17 need WRITTEN parental permission. Register online.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Firefighter Story Times are back this week. A member of the Elk Grove Village Fire Department--firefighting duties permitting--will demonstrate his or her equipment, discuss fire safety, and read a firefighter-related story or two at Read-to Me on Tuesday and Thursday, and at Alphabet Soup and Evening Story Time on Wednesday. No registration is needed.

On Wednesday, October 6, the movie The Karate Kid, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, will be shown at 4 p.m., in Kids Korner. All ages are welcome to this showing; snacks are permitted. No registration is necessary. Rated PG.
