LIBRARY HAPPENINGS AUGUST 1-7

ADULT SERVICES:
Although the Children's Summer Reading has ended, the Adult program, Dewey's Cruise Crew continues until August 28. Participants only have to read (or view) 5 items from 5 different categories to earn the official t-shirt. Register at the Adult Reference Desk, aka the SS READALOT.

On Monday, August 1, at 7 p.m., Scott Sanders will present a program on the popular free e-mail service, Gmail. Learn how to set up an account and how to take advantage of its special services. Register online.

The Morning Book Group will meet this coming Tuesday, August 2, at 10:30 a.m., to discuss The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows--a fictional epistolary novel looking back on the Nazi occupation of the Isle of Guernsey in WW II and the ways the inhabitants coped (or didn't) with the wartime situation. YOUTH SERVICES:
The Final drawing for the SRP raffle will be on Monday, August 1, at 11 a.m. Even though the program is "officially" over, participants can still collect prizes for the next week (or 2+). The SRP Finishers (earned a t-shirt) can attend the special programs featuring comedic juggler T.R. Loon on Wednesday, August 3, at 7 p.m., or on Thursday, August 4, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., or 7 p.m.

At 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the postponed Chess Tournament for children in grades k-8 will be held. Children do not have to have taken the classes. Register online.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JULY 25-31

ADULT SERVICES:
Mastering Cash Management: Key to Survival and Success will be the topic for the program to be presented by a representative from SCORE on Monday, July 25, at 7 p.m. Ways to use financial tools for the success of a small business will be discussed. Register online.

From 2 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, the Kenneth Young Center will be sponsoring an Open House showcasing a Unique Collection of Assistive Devices in the Lobby. The latest developments for persons with various types of impairments will be available for examination.

Professional computer technicians Eric Brodsky and Mark Klocksin will show patrons how to Tune Up Your Computer on Tuesday, July 26, at 7 p.m. They will "review Hardware (adding memory and parts replacement), Software (adding and removing programs and features, spyware and antivirus protection), and Hard Drive maintenance". Join other Library patrons for a "Bus" Trip on The South Shore Electric on Thursday, July 28, from 7 a.m. (yes, it's very early!) to 5 p.m. Trippers will board the South Shore Electric at Millenium Park and travel for just over an hour to Dune Park Station in Indiana. Then on the bus, they will visit the Indiana Dunes, the Barker Mansion in Michigan City, and, finally, the Heston Supper Club for dinner. Tickets are $79 and can be purchased at the Circulation Desk.

YOUTH SERVICES:
On Monday, July 25, at 2 p.m., BMX trick rider Matt Wilhelm will perform in the Library Parking Lot. This is a free event. All ages are welcome.

Travel back in time with the Kidsworks Touring Theatre Company as they present The Pharaoh, The Sphinx, and The Curse of the Mummy on Friday, July 29, at 11 a.m. Ages 4 and up are welcome, but preschoolers must come with an adult. No tickets are needed.

This is the final week for the Youth Services Summer Reading Program. There is still time to sign up. The final weekly raffle will be on Monday, August 1.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JULY 18-24

Adult Services:
The Morning Book Group will meet on Tuesday, July 19, at 10:30 a.m. They will be discussing I'd Know You Anywhere by Laura Lippman--now a mother with young children, a former kidnapping victim is contacted by the perpetrator and is forced to recall her horrifying experience. On Thursday, July 21, at 7 p.m., Bill Helmuth returns with a program on the history and current situation of Syria. Register online.

Youth Services:
Oba William King, actor, musician, and storyteller, will perform on Friday, July 22, at 11 a.m. in the Large Meeting Room. All ages are welcome, but pre-schoolers must come with an adult.

LIBRARY OPEN AGAIN TODAY

The Library re-opened today at 9 a.m. The electricity--and the air conditioning--are back on. Regular hours apply. Some scheduled programs will be rescheduled.

As a result of the recent storms, the Library is still closed today, Tuesday, July 12. At the present time, it will probably still be closed on Wednesday, July 13. The Library website will post the current status on its front page as soon as the information is available.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JULY 11-17

ADULT SERVICES:
IDES is back on Monday, July 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., for Effective Resumes, Interviewing and Job Search Techniques. Unemployed patrons are welcome to attend this free workshop to learn methods that might improve their searches for employment. A chance to participate in a mock interview will be included. Register online.

There are still openings for Scott Sanders' program Using Skype to Make Free Phone Calls, scheduled for Monday, July 11, at 7 p.m. See how videos as well as audio connections can be utilized and sent over the Internet. Register online.

I Have What? Finding Medical Information Online--find the most reliable online sites for medical information--is scheduled for Wednesday, July 13, at 7 p.m., with presenter Nancy Larson. Register online.

The Annual Ice Cream Social will be held on Sunday, July 17, from 2-4 p.m. Half a dollar buys a cool ice cream treat. Entertainment will be provided by local favorite group, The Meteors.

YOUTH SERVICES:
BMX Champ Matt Wilhelm is back on Monday, July 11, at 2 p.m. in the Library Parking Lot--because of the Power Outage from Monday's storm, Mr. Christopher will be performing on July 25. All ages are welcome to see his amazing tricks on a bicycle.

At 11 a.m. on Friday, July 15, Matt Rudolph will appear with a special Fun Around the World program, full of music and audience participation. All ages are welcome, but preschoolers must come with an adult. No registration is needed.

Children ages 10-16 are invited to attend a two week course on Babysitting, being held on two consecutive Saturdays, July 16 and 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Taught by a registered teacher, participants will learn to diaper, feed, and entertain little children as well as learning some basics on coping with emergencies. There is a cost of $10 for supplies, which include a book. Register online, but the registration is not complete until the fee is paid at the Youth Services Desk.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JULY 4-10

The Library will be closed on Monday, July 4, but will re-open at the usual time on Tuesday, July 5, 9 a.m.

It is not too late to join either the children's or adult's Summer Reading Programs. Check with the Reference Desks in each department

ADULT SERVICES:
The Morning Book Group will be discussing Julie Otsuka's When the Emperor Was Divine on Tuesday, July 5, at 10:30 a.m.--the travails of a Japanese-American family during and after WW II who incur detainment in an internment camp and eventually return to a vandalized California home. Call Chris Mika at extension 272 for more information.

On Thursday, July 7, at 7 p.m., the remake of True Grit, starring Jeff Bridges will be shown --a young girl enlists the aid of an old U.S. Marshall to find the man who killed her father. Rated PG-13. No tickets are needed.

AARP Driver Training--a two week class--will start on Friday, July 8 at 12:30 p.m. Motorists aged 50 and up can review their driving skills and techniques. The cost is $14 ($12 for AARP members) for materials. Call Jill Derkits for more information.

Friday, July 8, is Game Night for patrons aged 12 and up (children under 17 need written parental permission) starting at 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Play board games, PC games, Playstation, XBox, and Wii games in teams or solo. Snacks will be provided.

Madcap Puppets return on Friday, July 8, at 4 p.m., for a program of fairy tales from around the world. No tickets are needed. All ages are welcome, but preschoolers must come with an adult.
