LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 6

Monday, October 31, is Halloween, and the Library is hosting several related free events on that day.
Trick or Treating: visit the various departments all day for sweet treats
Face Painting: in Youth Services from 1-5 p.m.
Scream 4: watch this R rated movie at 7 p.m.; it stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox.

ADULT SERVICES:
On Wednesday, November 2, at 7 p.m., the program Help, I'm Addicted to...! will present healthful alternatives to the not-always-good-for-you comfort foods we all love too much. Register online.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 23-30

ADULT SERVICES:
Are you a ghost-a-holic? Can't get enough of scary "reality"? Join Jennifer Lauer from the Southern Wisconsin Paranormal Research Group for You've Got Ghosts! Haunted Tales from the Inbox on Monday evening, October 24, at 7 p.m. She will share some of the 11,000 e-mails the group has received as well as presenting some of their responses and investigations. On Thursday, October 27, at 7 p.m., staffer Julie Hadler will show how to do Digital Scrapbooking using Power Point. The class is full, but interested patrons can sign up for the Waiting List in case of a cancellation.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Instead of the usual Alphabet Soup, Getting Ready to Read, and Family Story Time this week, those times will be given over to the Halloween Parties and Parades. Children in preschool through kindergarten can drop in for stories, crafts, treats, and the highly anticipated parade through the Library. Attendees are encouraged to wear their costumes. The times are:
Tuesday, October 25, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, October 26, at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Thursday, October 27, at 10 a.m.

Tatiyana Piper from Whole Foods will be back on Tuesday, October 25, at 7 p.m., to show students in grades 6-12 a Freaky Feast. Learn how to make "frightfully delicious treats" for Halloween--and sample them as well. Register online.

Chess Instruction
begins again on Saturday, October 29. Beginners can learn about the basics at 1 p.m. and more advanced players can learn more at 2:15 p.m. For children in grades k-8. There are 3 weeks of classes and a tournament on the fourth week which is open to any student in grades k-8, even if they have not attended the classes. Register online

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 17-23

ADULT SERVICES:
Bill German, founder of the historic Rolling Stones fanzine Beggars Banquet, will talk about his encounters with the famous rock group on Monday, October 17, at 7 p.m., at the program Under Their Thumb, based on his recent book. Register online.

On Thursday, October 20, the Tour Bus will be leaving at 7:45 a.m. for a guided visit to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Then, after lunch at Maders German Restaurant, there will still be time for a browse through some of the shops on Old World Third Street. On the way home, there will be a stop at the Mars Cheese Castle in Kenosha. $64 is the cost of the tickets, available at the Circulation desk. Winners of the Elk Grove Art Association Annual Juried Show are now available for viewing in the Large Meeting Room for the next two weeks.

YOUTH SERVICES:
This week is Teen Read Week. Students in grades 6-12 can come to the Youth Reference Desk to play a simple game on the computer to earn up to 5 chances to win a digital camera. Chances will also be given to attendees at the program on Monday, October 17, at 7 p.m., YA Craft: Flip Flap Picture Album. Register online. The winner of the camera will be chosen on Saturday, October 22, at 2 p.m.

The Friends of the Library are having a Lobby Sale today until 7 p.m. Items include discarded Library items: adult best-sellers, children's hard-covers, children's cds, and Halloween related books, videos, and dvds.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 10-16

ADULT SERVICES:
The Friends will be having a Mini-Book-Sale in the Lobby on Monday, October 10, starting at 10 a.m.

Hunting for a job? Let IDES help in the search at the monthly program Effective Resumes, Interviewing and Job Search Techniques. Ever wonder where a particular spice comes from or how it is collected or just what it is or what it is used for? Join spice experts Patty and Tom Erd, owners of the prestigeous Spice House, on Wednesday, October 12, at 7 p.m., for The Lore and Lure of Spices. Register online.

The Computer Class Internet Basics will be offered on Friday, October 14, at 9:15 a.m. Find out what urls, hyperlinks, toolbars, browsers, and more are in this intro to the World Wide Web. Register online.

The AARP Driver Training class begins on Friday, October 14, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. This is a two week class; both sessions must be attended to be certified (which may mean a reduced insurance payment). YOUTH SERVICES:
For the Columbus Day Holiday, there will be two performances by local magician Rick Allen. His Magic and Illusion can be seen at 11 a.m. or at 1:30 p.m. No registration is needed, but seating is limited.

GAME NIGHT A WEEK EARLY

The monthly Game Night will be THIS Friday, October 7, from 7-10 p.m. (after hours), instead of the 14th. Register online. Participants must be at least 12 and, if 17 or under, need written parental permission to join in. There will be Wii, Playstation,and XBox games, PC games, board games, and more. LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 3-9

ADULT SERVICES:
The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig will be discussed by the Morning Book Group on Tuesday, October 4, at 10:30 a.m.--a man looks back on his education in a one-room rural school in early 20th century Montana. For more information, call Chris Mika at extension 272.

A Flu Clinic will be held on Wednesday, October 5, from 5-8 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. This is for Elk Grove Village residents only, ages 19 and up. The cost is $20. Medicare will be billed for eligible participants. For more information, call Jill Dirkets at extension 226.

YOUTH SERVICES:
It's Firefighter Story Times this week. Instead of Ready to Read, Alphabet Soup, and Family Story Time, the times for these programs will be turned over to representatives of the Elk Grove Fire Department--depending on their availability-- for related stories, demonstrations of fire safety, and a look at firefighting equipment and protective gear. For this special week, the story times will be drop-in, not just open to registered children, and for all ages. The times will be:
