LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 30-FEBRUARY 5

ADULT SERVICES:

If you have an e-reader, such as a Kindle, Nook, or iPad, you can download books from the Library website for free.  To learn HOW to do it, join Josh and Scott on Monday, January 30, from 6-9 p.m., or on Tuesday, January 31, from 3-6 p.m., for Downloading ebooks @ the Library.  No registration is needed; drop in any time within the time limits in the Large Meeting Room and they'll get you started.

At College 101 Night...Financing a College Education on Wednesday, February 1, at 7 p.m., Bailey Debus from ISAC will show how to fill out the FAFSA (application for Student Aid) and provide more information about scholarships and the pros and cons of student loans.  Register online.

There is a Bus Trip this week to see The Doyle and Debbie Show--a spoof of country music-- at the Royal George Theater Cabaret.   For $59, participants will ride the bus, see the show, and eat a "Brown Bag" dinner.  Tickets (limited to 46) may be purchased at the Circulation Desk.  For more information, call Jill Derkits at extension 226.

From 7-10 p.m. on Friday, February 3, Got Game? returns for an evening of solo and team playing of games--console, board, PC, and more.  Register online.  Open to patrons ages 12 and up; those under 17 need written parental permission.  For more information, call Josh at extension 282.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 23-29

ADULT SERVICES:
The Adult Winter Reading Program, Madame Reada's Traveling Gypsy Bookwagon, begins on Monday, January 23 and lasts until March 18.  Participants only need to read three books to be eligible for a prize drawing at the end of the program.  Also, on Monday only, patrons who sign up can make an appointment for a personal Tarot Reading from 10-11:30 a.m. or from 7-8:30 p.m.

On Thursday, January 26, at 7 p.m., a special program, Discover Chinese Culture & Celebrate Chinese New Year,  will be presented by Dr. Sen Yung of Chicago.  The Year of the Dragon starts this week and Dr. Yung will help celebrate with a review of Chinese history and culture, some performance previews of the Shen Yun Performing Arts Show (Classical Chinese Dance), and a tea ceremony.  Register online.  For more information, call Jill Derkits at extension 226.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 16-22

From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, January 16, the Friends will be hosting a Mini Book Sale consisting of items removed from the Library's collection.


ADULT SERVICES: On Monday, January 16, at 7 p.m., Monica Keane from CareerPlace will present ideas on making a job search more effective--More Than a Resume: A Job Hunter's Toolkit for Success. Register online or call Jill Derkits at extension 226.

New iPad users will want to attend this informative program, The iPad...for Reading Books, on Thursday, January 19, at 7 p.m., presented by a representative from the Apple Store. Learn how to use apps for the Kindle, Nook, and iBook, as well as more book related apps. Register online.


YOUTH SERVICES: As a special Martin Luther King Day program, Kidworks will be performing Peace Tales from Around the World on Monday, January 16, at 11 a.m. There will be songs, stories, and a chance to learn special words in other languages, including Sign Language. No registration is needed. The program is aimed at children aged 4 and up. Preschoolers must come with an adult. Strollers will not be allowed in the room if it is very crowded.


The Winter Reading Program has begun and will run through March 2. There is still time to collect a log and start reading--30 minutes of reading earns two chances for prizes: weekly and final drawings from the shoeboxes.


Winter classes have begun as well and there are openings in all of the ones that need registration to attend. Just go to the Calender of Events Page to sign up.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 9-15

ADULT SERVICES:
IDES returns on Monday, January 9, at 9:30 a.m. for another workshop for job-hunters, Effective Resumes, Interviewing and Job Search Techniques. A chance to do a mock interview will be included in the workshop. It ends at 4:30 p.m. Register online.

On Tuesday, January 10, the sci-fi/western Cowboys & Aliens will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. The movie has an isolated 1870's Arizona Territory town, a stranger who stumbles in out of the desert, and an attack from an alien ship in the skies. And, it stars Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, and Olivia Wilde. Rated PG-13. No tickets are needed.

Internet Basics, the Computer Class for those totally in the dark about getting "online", will be offered on Wednesday, January 11, at 9:30 a.m. Learn about urls, toolbars, Internet addresses, and more. Register online or call Lisa at extension 233.

Got a new Kindle for Christmas? Do you know how to use it? Find out How to Use a Kindle from a Best Buy representative on Wednesday, January 11, at 7 p.m. There will also be information on downloading e-books from the Library website. Register online.

Learn how to Shift Your Assets from Clutter to Cash with Laura Bruzas on Thursday, January 12, at 7 p.m. She will present several different ways to get rid of outdated or no-longer-useful items from electronics to clothing--and make a profit as well. Register online.

A new 2-week session of AARP Drivers Training begins on Friday, January 13, at 1 p.m. The second required session will be on Friday, January 20. To attend, a patron must be 50 years of age or older, must come both weeks, and must pay a book fee of $14 ($12 for AARP members). Driving techniques and a Rules-of the-Road review will be included. Game Night returns on Friday, January 13, at 7 p.m.
Come to the Library "after hours" on one of our monthly game nights where you can answer the Call of Duty, snipe a zombie Left 4 Dead, or solve the mystery of whodunit in an old-school game of clue. We'll supply the snacks and games. Players must be at least 12 years of age; those under 17 require a signed parental permission slip. No one will be admitted after 7pm!

YOUTH SERVICES: Although registration for the Winter Wolves Reading Program--Read to Succeed-- doesn't start until Saturday, January 14, the Visit by the Wolves Player will be on Tuesday, January 10, at 7 p.m. Appearing in Kids Korner will be Right Wing Darren Haydar defenseman Dustin Friesen. He will discuss what it's like to play professional hockey, will show what the players wear, and will sign autographs. No tickets are necessary.


Online Registration has begun. Winter classes start Monday, January 9, with Baby Tales, a drop-in class for parents and babies aged 6 months to 2 1/2 years. Another class for this age group is Twilight Tales on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. For children ages 2 1/2 to 3 1/2, there is a Wednesday morning drop-in class at 10 a.m., Alphabet Soup. The other drop-in class is the Family Storytime, for all ages, on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m.


Registration is needed for these classes:
Ready to Read (for children aged 3 1/2 and up) on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. and on Thursdays at 10 a.m.
Science and More (for children in grade 1 and up) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m.

Saturday, January 14, is the official start of the Winter Reading Program. Earn chances to win weekly and end-of-the-program prizes by reading a certain number of minutes per chance ticket. Children who register on Saturday the 14th will receive a ticket for a chance to win a Wolves' Replica Shirt (3 sizes will be available). Registration starts at 9 a.m. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Yo-Yo Man will be demonstrating his fascinating tricks.
