LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 26-APRIL 1

It's Spring Break Week and Youth Services has several special programs scheduled (regular Storytimes and programs are suspended for this week or had their last meeting last week). First up is Samantha's Amazing Animal Adventure on Tuesday, March 27, at 11 a.m. [already in progress] and at 1:30 p.m. All ages are welcome. No tickets are needed. Preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult and no strollers will be allowed due to space considerations.

On Wednesday, March 28, at 11 a.m., the film The Muppets will be shown in the large Meeting Room--when they hear their old theater is to be torn down, the Muppets rally to organize a telethon to raise money to save it. Rated PG. No tickets are needed.

On Thursday, March 29, Chicago Magician Dennis Debondt is scheduled to present his show Very Funny Magic. Show times are 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. All ages are welcome, but preschoolers must come with an adult. No tickets are necessary.

 There are still a few openings for Brickology on Friday, March 30 at 11 a.m. "Lego Lady" Beth Weis will bring 100 pounds of Lego and provide 2 hours of opportunities for creative building. For children in first grade and up. Register online.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 12-18

IDES will be presenting its monthly workshop for job-seekers--Effective Resumes, Interviewing, and Job Search Techniques--on Monday, March 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. How to look for a job, how to apply for a job, and how to make a good impression in an interview will be covered. A chance to participate in a mock interview will also be part of the program. Register online.

On Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m., the Leonardo DiCaprio film J. Edgar will be shown in the Large Meeting Room--the powerful and influential FBI director hid a dangerous secret most of his life. Rated R. No tickets are necessary.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 5-11

ADULT SERVICES: Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat who Touched the World by Vicki Myron will be discussed by the Morning Book Group on Tuesday, March 6, at 10:30 a.m. Found in the book drop at an Iowa library, the abandoned kitten remained there for nearly 20 years as mascot, comforter, and insprirational model. Game Night is this coming Friday, March 9, from 7 to 10 p.m. Games of all types, from board games to PC games to Wii, Playstation, and xBox games, will be available to solo and team players ages 12 and up. Players under the age of 17 need written parental permission to attend. Pizza and pop will also be provided. Register online.


YOUTH SERVICES: The Wolves Winter Reading Program is now over and the final drawings were held on Saturday. The list of winners is at the Youth Reference Desk and will be online later this week. Congratulations to all the readers--and the winners.

The 2012 Battle of the Books concludes on Monday evening, March 5, with the top four teams competing in semifinals--at 6 and at 6:30 p.m.--and finals--at 7 p.m. All teams and interested adults are invited to attend the Final Battle at 7, which will be followed by awards and by refreshments.

There are still some openings for Geek Fest on Friday, March 9, at 4 p.m., a part of Teen Tech Week. Students in 6th through 12th grade can earn tickets to be entered in a drawing for a Kindle Fire by participating in different activities, from de-constructing a computer to making "art" with computer parts to decorating a CD clock--and more.  Register online.
