Library Celebrates the Great American Eclipse

We're gearing up for the Great American Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21. Come celebrate with us!

NASA Live Feed

Stop by the lobby on Monday, August 21 starting at 11am where we'll show NASA's four-hour show, Eclipse Across America: Through the Eyes of NASA. It will include unprecedented live video of the solar eclipse and coverage of activities in parks, libraries, stadiums, festivals, and museums across the nation.

Pinhole Viewer Craft

We will supply all the materials to make a pinhole viewer so you can safely witness the solar eclipse.

You can also find instructions for making a pinhole viewer online, courtesy of NASA, if you want to make one at home.

Facts About the Eclipse
  • It is the first total eclipse to cross the entire United States, coast to coast, since 1918.
  • It will take about 90 minutes for the eclipse to zoom across the entire continent. It will start out west in Lincoln City, Oregon at 12:16pm and end out east in Charleston, South Carolina at 2:48pm.
  • Elk Grove Village is not in the "path of totality," but it will witness a partial eclipse (about 87%). Peak viewing of the eclipse in Chicago and northern Illinois will last about 6 minutes at around 1:17pm.
